Colombia: ‘I’m afraid to walk down the street’

Colombia’s capital, Bogota, has been plunged into chaos by a wave of violent protests against the government of President Juan Manuel Santos.

The latest unrest, which erupted on Monday, is taking place in a mostly residential neighbourhood in the city centre.

The protests, which started at around midnight, have spread to many parts of the city and have been joined by a number of armed groups.

According to Reuters, at least six people have been killed.

President Santos says he will impose a state of emergency after the unrest and police have been used to quell the protests.

At least 25 people have died in the unrest, according to AFP.

The country’s constitution says the government is to take “all measures necessary” to ensure the security of the population, including through the use of armed forces.

The president has not commented on the violence.
