Why is it that every year, one or two Australians are murdered by someone in the US?

Posted February 12, 2019 09:06:08A new report out by the Australian newspaper says that each year in Australia, between one and two Australians die by gun violence in the United States, as many as 1,100 Australians a year are killed by other people in the country.

The report says the figures come from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the US Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey, which are both collected through surveys of police departments and other agencies.

“There is no question that the vast majority of these crimes are committed by people who are not American citizens,” the report said.

Australia has been under heightened scrutiny over the past few years due to the high number of mass shootings in the U.S. and Australia, including at a Sydney school and a cafe in the capital Canberra. ABC/AP
